UNITED-KINGDOM - Plans to build a wind farm at a Greater Manchester beauty spot have been rejected by councillors. Energy company E On UK wanted to build seven 350ft turbines on Saddleworth Moor, above the village of Denshaw.
The company said the farm would have generated enough electricity for 8,500 homes, but environmentalists claimed it would ruin the landscape.
The application was rejected by Oldham Council on Thursday night. Campaigners have welcomed the decision.
A planning report said the negative impact on the landscape outweighed the benefit of electricity from a renewable source.
Councillor Mike Buckley, of the Saddleworth Moors Action Group, said it was a "relief" that the long-running row had been brought to a conclusion.
"I was delighted with the decision. I was very pleased with the professional way in which the Oldham planners handled the case," he said.
"I think they all found it a difficult decision but I am pleased to say they came down on the right side of the argument as far as I am concerned."
